DISCOVER THE JEWELS AROUND YOU

The Gorges du Verdon

The largest canyon in Europe, between the villages of Castellane and Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, offers majestic landscapes. A road goes around the Gorges which separate the Alpes de Haute Provence from the Var.

The cliffs, which vary in height from 250 to 700 metres, are the scene of numerous encounters, including griffon vultures and black vultures.

You can admire the Gorges du Verdon from the Point Sublime, the Belvédère de L'Escalés, the Belvédère de Mayreste, the Corniche sublime, the Falaise des Cavaliers, the Pont de l'Artuby, the Balcons de la Mescla...

Climbing and hiking, but also canyoning are some of the activities that the Gorges offer.

The Plateau of Valensole

A huge sea of rolled pebbles, the Valensole plateau is the "granary of the region". Recognised as one of the largest plateaus in France, it is located 30 km from Moustiers.

In addition to the cultivation of lavandin, this land is suitable for the cultivation of cereals with the famous durum wheat, the cultivation of olive trees, truffles and almonds. The almond princess, the finest, is much sought after in the pastry industry and in confectionery for the manufacture of calisson and nougat which is prepared with the lavender honey of the plateau of an exceptional quality!

The Lake of Sainte-Croix

This artificial lake was created in 1973, following the construction of the Sainte-Croix dam just 5kms from Moustiers. The lake covers an area of 2200 hectares (10 kilometres long and 2 kilometres wide).

The green color of the Verdon is due to the fluoride and the micro algae it contains: it is probably the origin of its name, from the latin Viridium, "green place".The turquoise color of the lake is due to the clayay bottoms.
